How the Internet Works

With multiple millions of people on the internet, have you ever wordered how it works?

Everyone is hooked together. Everyone has a unique address for their computer or phone (or any device on web) called an "IP" (internet protocol) address. In 2010 all available addresses were used up and new ones were created. Now there are over 320 quenta trillion, trillion addresses available.

Computers aren't good with names.... but they are great with numbers.

A computer called a Domain Name Server (DNS) looks up the name (like: waltergrady.com) and tells the computer that wants the information the number (or IP address). If you want to know your IP address, type "what is my IP" in your web browser search bar. You'll get it right away.

It happens like this:

  • Enter name of web site or email address
  • Computer's broadcast their message across the world
  • The request is passed along to DNS servers via a broadcast until a DNS server
    that knows address is found
  • The DNS server looks up the name and gives it the correct IP address
  • The DNS server replies to the sender with the location
    and conversation begins.

The World Wide Web (www) began as a way for scientists to communicate with each other.

As the web became graphics oriented web sites were designed with a programing language called "HyperText Markup Language" or HTML. That's why web pages have an .htm or .html extension.

It's important to remember that everything you see on the internet is the result of programming... It was designed by someone!

Things on the internet may be a picture of reality or fantasy!

Just because the page says, "If you don't want to buy this... click here." it doesn't mean that's what will happen. The "x" in the upper right corner is safe (most of the time!).
